Classic Beef Burger Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Ground beef: 1 pound (80/20 meat-to-fat ratio is ideal for juicy burgers)
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder: 1/2 teaspoon (optional)
  • Onion powder: 1/2 teaspoon (optional)
  • Burger buns: 4
  • Cheese slices: 4 (American, cheddar, or your choice)
  • Lettuce: A few leaves
  • Tomato: 1, sliced
  • Onion: 1, sliced
  • Pickles: A few slices
  • Ketchup, mustard, and/or mayo: To taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Patties:

    • In a large bowl, gently mix the ground beef with salt, pepper, and any additional seasonings like garlic powder or onion powder. Avoid over-mixing to keep the patties tender.
    • Divide the beef into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 1/2 inch thick. Use your thumb to make a small indentation in the center of each patty; this helps prevent them from puffing up too much while cooking.
  2. Preheat the Grill or Pan:

    • If using a grill, preheat it to medium-high heat.
    • If using a skillet or grill pan, heat it over medium-high heat. Add a bit of oil if the pan is not non-stick.
  3. Cook the Patties:

    • Place the patties on the grill or in the pan. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Avoid pressing down on the patties to keep them juicy.
    • If adding cheese, place a slice on each patty about 1 minute before the burgers are done cooking. Cover the grill or pan with a lid to help the cheese melt.
  4. Toast the Buns:

    • While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster. This adds a nice crunch and helps prevent the buns from becoming soggy.
  5. Assemble the Burgers:

    • Spread condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo) on the bottom half of each bun.
    • Place the cooked patty with melted cheese on top.
    • Add lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles as desired.
    • Top with the other half of the bun.
  6. Serve:

    • Serve immediately with your favorite side dishes like fries or a salad.

Feel free to customize your burger with additional toppings or sauces to suit your preferences. Enjoy your delicious homemade burger!
